Alexandria, VA had a thriving salt-glazed stoneware industry throughout most of the 19th Century. Many pieces are marked with the makers name and "ALEXa" or "DC/ALEXa". Some common makers were John Swann, B.C. Milburne, H.C. Smith and E.J.Miller (a retailer). We are always interested in purchasing examples of Alexandria stoneware. Fine Antique Japanese Black Lacquer Tea Caddy, rectangular with rounded corners with polychrome and gilt decoration of figures engaged in various tasks. Circa 1870.

French Boulle Style Tea Caddy, rectangular with cut-corners and slightly domed lid with all sides and two interior lids extensively inlaid with engraved brass and red and black colored lacquer simulating tortoise-shell in the 17th century manner. Circa 1850.

Exceptional Arts & Crafts painted leather necessaire with tooled, painted and gilt decoration of birds and blossoms, opening to an interior complete with almost all of its original fittings including bottles and trays with fire gilt lids, brushes, combs, buttonhook, etc. French, c. 1870-1880.
