Alexandria, VA had a thriving salt-glazed stoneware industry throughout most of the 19th Century. Many pieces are marked with the makers name and "ALEXa" or "DC/ALEXa". Some common makers were John Swann, B.C. Milburne, H.C. Smith and E.J.Miller (a retailer). We are always interested in purchasing examples of Alexandria stoneware. English, most likely Bilston, eighteenth century. The elongated oval shape, all over floral decoration, and the unusual brown painted panels are not infrequent characteristics of Bilston’s “gingham finish” enamel boxes, hence the Bilston attribution.

Fine cracks to enamel, and small losses on both sides and back.

Small Tumbridge Ware Trinket Box in Rosewood having a hinged lid inlayed with a display of roses depicted in micro mosaic, framed by bandings of contrasting light and dark wood and particularly well matched geometric micro mosaic.

Extremely Rare George III Tea Caddy in the shape of an urn-form knife box, in partridge wood with satnwood stringing, octagonal with pagoda shaped lid and acorn-form finial, urn-form body and turned socle with square plinth base having inlaid banding (lock replaced). Circa 1790. Provenance: The Terence J. Fox Collection of Tea Equipage, Formerly the Collection of Iroquois Brands, Ltd.. Height, 10.”

Antique Gilt Silver and Green Chalcedony Mounted Crystal and Mahogany Umbrella Handle in the Secessionist taste. European, Circa 1900, now mounted on a carved wood base.

Most likely French, 19th century. The image of an Englishman hunting with a hound was a common image on enamel boxes, especially snuff boxes in the eighteenth century. However, it clearly dates to the late nineteenth century. The lug and ribbed banding on the metal hinge, as well as the completely hand painted nature of the lid identify this box as a nineteenth-century creation.

Damage to hinge. Lid does not close entirely. Loss to underside enamel.

Rare 18th century fruit wood apple shaped tea caddy, having a circular hinged lid with carved bone “stem”, opening to a tin-lined interior. Probably Continental, Circa 1760-80.

English, Bilston, 18th century, patch box. These memento boxes were popular at the end of the eighteenth century and frequently given as tokens of friendship and love. They were also purchased as souvenirs while traveling. They frequently started with the phrase “A trifle from...” as seen on this box. Rare Chinese Export Roll Top Lap Desk, Asian Hardwoods with ebony and brass mounts having single lower drawer that when opened reveals a fitted interior, sloped writing surface and "pop-up" storage compartment with tambour doors. Circa 1830.

Fine Pair of Grand Tour Bronze and Ormolu Candlesticks in the Empire style with fluted baluster shaped shafts , with acanthus decoration on gilt-bronze sections and paw feet raised atop tripartite bases. These would have been brought home as a souvenir by someone who had made the Grand Tour. France or Italy, circa 1870.
