James was a painter, teacher and writer, born in Richmond, VA. He lived in Richmond and also maintained a home in Salisbury, Vermont. He was a member of the Society of Washington Artists, the southern VermontArtists, the Academy of Fine Arts and Science (Richmond) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond). He exhibited at the Socie ty of Independent Artists (NYC), the Art Institute of Chicago and the Salons of America (NYC).
