John Hitchens was born in 1940 in Hove, Sussex. He studied at Bedales School, Petersfield and Bath Academy of Art,Corsham. His work initially focused primarily on the patterns of landscapes, but in recent decades has become abstract. He has exhibited extensively throughout England both in solo and group shows.
According to Mr. Hitchens himself: “Landscape is the original source of my paintings. This is translated through motifs that represent Field and Furrow, Harvest and Plough, River and Trackway, Fence and Form. The paintings are sometimes nearer, sometimes further, from the subject characteristics. A Period photographing these landscape elements from the air, gave me an awareness of seeing the land as a two dimensional composition. . . .Thus my current work is abstract, with very strong landscape associations. The sources remain, but the paintings themselves are the reason for the journey.”
