Born in Waal, Bavaria, Herkomer became a lauded engraver and painter of portraits, historical subjects and landscapes.

Herkomer moved with is family to the United Kingdom as a young child and began his artistic studies at the age of 17. In 1866 he enrolled at the South Kensington Schools where he studied under Luke Fildes and was greatly influenced by Frederick Walker. Eventually, he became a contributor to the graphic design magazine, appropriately titled, The Graphic.

Herkomer rose to fame and painted some of the most celebrated personalities of the nineteenth century including, Ruskin, Wagner, Lord Kelvin and Lord Kitchener. He even established and led the School of Art at Bushey, and became a Slade Professor of Fine Arts at Oxford. Ultimately, Herkomer’s success led the Emperor of Germany to elevate him to the nobility in 1899, and he received a British knighthood in1907.

He exhibited at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street, Old Watercolour Society, and the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours. Today, his work can be found in the Tate Collection, Harvard University and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
