American Chippendale Ox-Bow Slant-Front Desk. Massachusetts, Circa 1780. In Nicely Faded Mahogany, the hinged, rectangular lid opening to an interior fitted with an arrangement of valanced pigeonholes and small drawers. Below are four reverse-serpentine graduated drawers and the whole is raised on graceful ogee bracket feet. The grain of the mahogany on the lid and drawer fronts is very fine and the sides are 'plum-pudding' mahogany. The pulls and some of the escutcheons appear to be original.
The ox-bow or reverse serpentine shape for case furniture was one of
America's first distinctive furniture forms since it was rarely found in British cabinetmaking.
The ox-bow shaped front remained popular in New England well past the Revolutionary War, but only the most skillful cabinetmakers would attempt the complex shaping necessary. Height 44", Width 45", Depth 24" |
