A. Raphael Beck (American, 1858-1947) Knitting by the Shore Oil on canvas, signed and dated: “1906”.
Painting size: 18.25” x 24” A native of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, Beck studied art with his sculptor father, Augustus, landscape painter Paul Weber in Munich, Germany, and Leon Baschet at the Académie Julian in Paris. After his studies abroad, Beck returned to the United States to settle in Lockport, New York and to work and teach in Buffalo. While in New York he achieved great success by designing the logo for th Pan-American Exposition of 1901, depicting two women whose bodies and clothing formed the shape of the Americas. Most importantly, he is noted for creating the last portrait of President McKinley before his assassination. His work achieved recognition at the Pan-American Exposition of 1901, the St. Louis Exposition of 1904, and the Lewis and Clark Exposition of 1905.
