Dominique Louis Papety (French, 1815-1849) Boaters on a Park Lake Watercolor and gouache, signed.
Painting size: 5” x 6.5” Born in Marseille, France, Papety was a watercolorist and genre painter who specialized in religous compositions and historical scenes. In 1836, at the age of 21, he won the Grand Prix de Rome. Afterwards he came under the tutelage of Ingres, who believed Papety to be a truly talented artist. Papety was well traveled, having visited Syria, Palestine and Greece. However, it would be his second trip to Greece that would prove to be his undoing. Invited to return by the Duc de Montpensier to portray the royal family, Papety fell ill. Although Papety returned to France, he never recovered from the illness, which eventually took his life two years later at the age of 34. Today his work can be found at The Wallace Collection, and the Louvre. Source: Benezit, E. Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs. www.louvre.fr |
