George Heriot (Scottish, 1766-1844)

In the Tyrol

Sepia watercolor on paper.

Provenance: The Fine Art Society of London The Philip Desind Collection

An amateur artist, Heriot was educated at Edinburgh High School, Woolwich Academy and Edinburgh University. While at Woolwich, P. Sandby was the drawing master and greatly influenced Heriot’s development as an artist.

A career civil servant, Heriot immigrated to Canada where we eventually rose to the position of Deputy Post Master General of Canada. He was also quite an adventurer traveling through Spain, France, Austria, the [English] Channel Islands, Canada, Scotland and Wales. His travels were the inspiration for much of his artistic expression.

Upon his retirement and subsequent return to Scotland, he published Travels Through Canada which he also illustrated.

Heriot is listed in The Dictionary of Scottish Painters 1600-1960 by Harris and Halsby and The Dictionary of British Watercolor Artists up to 1920 by Mallalieu.
