Malcolm Fraser (American, 1868-1949) Man with a Pipe Ink on Paper, signed and dated: "1891" and inscribed: "To My Friend, Dr. Palmer" Born in Montreal, Canada to an artistic family, Fraser grew up in New York City. While there he began his artistic education at the Art Students League. However, in 1888 Fraser would travel to the epicenter of the art world, Paris, to finish his studies. He was a student at the Academie Julien with Boulanger, the Academy of Beaux Arts, and the Sorbonne. It was at this time that he created portraits of some of the most important people of the day including Queen Wilhelmina of Holland and barons Rothschild. However, in 1897 Fraser returned to the United States where he began a successful and long career as an illustrator of magazines, children’s books and advertisements. He worked steadily, with the exception of his involvement in WWI, until his death in 1949. Sources:
