Pastoral Landscapes (a pair) (British School, 19th century) Though the artist is unidentified, each painting is inscribed in the lower left quadrant with a monogram and the date “1861.”
Painting size: 42” x 36” This pair of large scale pastoral paintings creates an environment of sorts where viewers’ imaginations can wander down a country road to a prosperous farm or an old stone bridge. In one, a mother and child greet a farmer on horseback, while in the other, a shepherd sits and rests, surveying his flock with no great urgency. Landscapes with farm animals--in this case, herds of placid sheep--were popular “reinterpretations” of 17th-century Dutch genre work collected by Victorian art enthusiasts. The gentle animals, verdant trees and sunny skies convey a reassuringly peaceful image of farm life. Yet the sheep also carry red markings on their bodies denoting ownership, a realistic detail that contemporary urban viewers would have recognized, making these country idylls somehow obtainable for them. |
