Pastoral Landscape with Stream Henry Maidment signing as R Fenson (British, active 1889-1914) Oil on canvas, signed lower left corner. British painter Henry Maidment often signed his work with the pseudonym R Fenson, typically in red with a date. He also worked under the name A. Wynne. Active prior to World War I, Maidment painted landscapes in Essex, but also visited Wales, Warwickshire, Kent, Surrey and Sussex. His skilled execution and gentle rural subject matter made his work tremendously popular among contemporaries and later collectors. In this quiet landscape, a figure crosses a bridge over a placid stream towards an open field. On the left, an old building with a high pitched roof embraced by two mature trees creates an overall soothing composition. Madmen is listed in Hidden Talents, A Dictionary of Neglected Artists Working 1880-1959 (Wood, 1994).
