Hunt Scene in the Roman Campana J.P. Young (British, mid-19th century) Oil on canvas, signed and located “Rome” . Provenance: The Ritz-Carleton, Pentagon City, Virginia.
Painting size: 29.5” x 49” The juxtaposition of a hunt scene and an Italian landscape points to a British romanticized perception of Mediterrain culture during the late -19th and early 20th centuries, evidenced by such popular contemporary novels as E.M. Foster’s A Room with a View where the beauty of Italy’s countryside and cities awaken emotional truths in the hearts of English tourists. While it’s impossible to speculate what may be in the hearts of these red- coated hunters, they appear at ease, pausing a moment next to a roughhewn farmhouse. A pack of hound dogs spill over the land in hot pursuit of their prey. While they add energy to the present scene, the ancient aqueduct in the background stands in solid quietude, representing the activity of the past. |
