Clarence Henry Roe (British, 1850-1909)

Pair of Highland Landscapes

Oil on artist board, signed and retaining supply labels from Windsor and Newton.
Painting: 12” x 9”
Frame: 23” x 19”

Victorian painter Clarence Henry Roe is best known for his renderings of the Scottish Highlands and lochs. His father, Robert Henry Roe, was also a landscape painter who was devoted to the same subject. Little is known about this artist and there appears to be no record of him exhibiting in London, but he did exhibit at the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1887.

Like many other landscape painters, Clarence Roe used plein air studies of natural elements-- such as a craggy boulder-- to create idealized compositions. This pair of rocky landscapes, for example, are compositional inversions of each other, with a mountain in the background, a lake at center and a clutch of trees at the far left or far right. Roe’s rich color choices and precise brushwork reinforce the harmony between these works.

Clarence Henry Roe is listed in the Dictionary of British Art, Volume IV: Victorian Painters (Wood, 1995), The Dictionary of British Artists, 1880-1940 (Johnson and Greutzner, 1980) and Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (Bénézit,1999).
