John Frederick Herring, Sr. specialized in painting racehorses and barnyard scenes. He exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy and Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, and at one time held an appointment as animal painter to the Duchess of Kent.

Much of Herring’s work was engraved and widely circulated and therefore well known.

Herring’s considerable success made him an artist both to emulate and to envy, indicated by the career of his son, John Herring Frederick, Jr. Though there were conflicts between father and son, Herring, Jr. devoted his artistic efforts to copying and imitating his parent’s popular farm scenes. Possibly this work is an example. It is signed “JF Herring Senr;” both painters used the same name and initials, creating, perhaps, some deliberate confusion. Nonetheless this painting of horses and figures on a shady rural lane is a pleasing genre scene.
