William Russell Flint (Scottish, 1880-1969) The Mirror of the Ballet Color print, signed in pencil. Provenance: Horner Galleries, Sheffield, England.
Painting size: 15.25” x 19.5” Painter and printmaker William Russell Flint worked for the London Illustrated News and lived in Notting Hill. One of his neighbors, Dame Marie Rambert, operated The Mercury Theatre and Ballet School in a local converted church hall. Flint depicts one of the school’s rehearsal rooms with a group of dancers at rest, a number of them costumed to represent different ballets: one dancer testing her pointe slipper wears a white stiff tutu evocative of Swan Lake while her companion poses in a long filmy skirt like a Willi from Giselle. Seated next to the mirror is a dancer wearing a Spanish-inspired outfit suitable for Don Quixote. Flint exhibited at the Royal Academy in London. He is listed in The Dictionary of British Artists (Johnson and Greutzner, 1980) and in the Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs (Bénézit, 1999). |
