Marie Louise Hoover (née Rochon) (American, 1898-1976) Entrance to the Estate Oil on board, signed.
Painting size: 14” x 17.75” Washington DC native Marie Louise Hoover (née Rochon) studied at the Corcoran School of Art. By 1920 she and her husband, Charles Hoover, moved to New York where they established a graphic art studio. The couple returned to Washington in 1924 and Hoover set up her own studio in the Star Building. An illustrator and portrait painter, Hoover executed fashion drawings for the Washington Evening Star. She was a member of the Society of Washington Artists and regularly exhibited in their annual show at the Corcoran from 1916 to 1932. The Gates demonstrates Hoover’s versatility as an artist. Departing from the linear qualities of graphic design, her Impressionist brushwork creates a lively interplay of light and shadow in the trees, across the gate posts and along the road. Two paintings by Hoover are in the collections of the National Museum of American Art. She is listed in Who Was Who in American Art (Falk, 1999) and The Artists of Washington, D.C., 1796-1996 (McMahan, 1995). |
