Bronze Group by Auguste Nicolas Cain (French,1822-1894)

Auguste Nicolas Cain (French, 1822-1894)

Hungry Babies

Length: 18.5”
Height: 9.5”
Diameter: 10”

Parisian Auguste Nicolas Cain was considered to be one of the premier animal sculptors of his day. Originally a joiner, he turned to sculpture through the influence of his father-in law, artist P.J. Mêne. Cain studied with sculptors Rude and Guionnet and worked in both wax and bronze. Cain was particularly prolific from 1846 to 1868 and known for his small bronzes of animals and birds.

In this lively figural group, a mother bird delivers a worm to an eager chick. Meanwhile below, a group of four chicks look at a snail with intense interest, one primed to snatch him up. The bronze sculpture is mounted on a black slate base.

Cain’s sculptures can be found in Paris’ Jardin du Luxembourg and Jardin des Tuileries and the gardens at the Trocadéro. He is listed in the Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs et Graveurs (Bénézit, 1999) and The Dictionary of Western Sculptors in Bronze (Mackay, 1977).
