Landscapes with Figures, a pair attr: Richard Wilson (English 1713-1782) Oils on canvas Paintings: 10.5" x 9.75" A master of British 18th C. landscape painting, Wilson was first trained as a portrait painter in London. After spending time in Italy in the 1750's and studing the works of Claude and Gaspard Poussin, he developed a type of classical landscape that he brought with him back to England. He constantly used the drawings he did in Italy in later years for his Italian paintings as will as views of the rural environs of London and Wales. He often repeated his most popular designs and had numerous followers in his own lifetime, so the connoisseurship of Wilsons is extremely trickey, hence our attribution of this pair. |
