Edmund John Niemann (British, 1813-1876) View from Streatham, North Oil on canvas, signed and titled on the reverse. Painting size: 12” x 18” Edmund John Niemann was a painter of landscapes and marine scenes which were often very large. He was born in Islington, his father being German. Niemann was employed as a young man at Lloyds, but after 1839 he devoted himself to art, and settled at High Wycombe where he worked incessantly out of doors. From 1844-1872 he exhibited at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, the Society of British Artists, and elsewhere. He returned to London in 1848 where he exhibited and, in 1850, became Secretary of the Portland Gallery. He often painted the scenery of the Thames and of the Swale near Richmond in Yorkshire.
