Louis Étienne Timmermans (French, 1846-1910) The Seine by Moonlight Oil on panel, signed and dated: “1903” Painting size: 15” x 18” Born in Brussels of French parents, Timmermans was a student at l’Académie de Bruxelles and l’École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He exhibited at the Salon from 1904 on. He was known for his landscapes and especially for his marine scenes around Brittany and Normandy as well as the quais of the Seine. Timmermans displayed a particular sensitivity to the atmosphere of the small fishing villages and ports which he painted with a precise realism. He brought back from a sojourn in Holland landscapes with a new found lyricism to the light on the water. Timmermans died in Paris in 1910.
