Gladys Nelson Smith (American, 1890-1980) Young Girl with a Puppy Oil on canvas, laid down, signed with initials lower left and estate stamped on reverse.
Painting Size: 13.25” x 9.75” Smith was born in Kansas and began her artistic training at the University of Kansas School of Fine Arts. She continued her studies at the Art Institute of Chicago. When she settled in Washington, DC in 1924, she also studied at the Corcoran School of Art. She painted all manner of subjects from portraits to still lifes and landscape and genre scenes. She exhibited these works with the Society of Washington Artists from which she won her first prize. a bronze medal, in 1929. She also exhibited in the 1935 Greater Washington Independent Exhibition and with the Landscape Club in Washington in 1939. At the age of 89, she was granted the honor of a solo exhibition at the Veerhoff Gallery in Washington, DC. The Corcoran Gallery of Art celebrated her work in a posthumous exhibit in 1984-1985. Smith is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk and The Artists of Washington, DC by McMahan. |
