A hunter, fly-fisherman, and artist since his childhood on a Connecticut farm, Reneson was influenced to pursue a career as an artist by his neighbor the New York illustrator R.H. Collins. After showing a marked artistic talent during high school, Reneson enrolled in the University of Hartford Art School. It was during a field trip to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1958 that Reneson first saw the work of Winslow Homer. This exhibit more than any previous influence inspired Reneson to continue to follow his dream. His early career was filled with commercial work for avionic and natural science companies. Then in 1967, he approached the New York gallery “Crossroads of Sport” about carrying his work. The transition between commercial and gallery work was gradual with more and more of Reneson’s time going toward the creation of sporting art. From that beginning, Reneson has grown to be one of the best known names in contemporary sporting art. He has been named Artist of the Year twice by by Ducks Unlimited (1982 & 1990) and Atlantic Salmon Federation (1982 & 2000) and recognized with the same honor in 1982 by Trout Unlimited. His work has been exhibited at the Easton Waterfowl Festival; King Gallery, New York; Old Lyme Art Academy and American Museum of Fly Fishing, Manchester, VT. Reneson’s work is showcased in two books, "Shadows on the Flats: The Saltwater Images of Chet Reneson and Ed Grey" and "The Watercolors of Chet Reneson". |
