Dehn was a talented painter, illustrator and printmaker. He also taught and wrote two instructional books on artistic technique. As a printmaker, he developed new techniques in the art of lithography.

He began his studies at the Minneapolis School of Art until moving to New York City in 1917 and continuing at the Art Students League under the instruction of Boardman Robinson and Kenneth Hayes Miller. A very active exhibitor, Dehn won several prizes for his work. Both the Art Institute of Chicago and Library of Congress awarded him prizes. He also won the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1939 and prizes from the Philadelphia Artists Alliance and Philadelphia Print Club. His work was shown at the Boston Museum of Fine Art, Minneapolis Institute of Art, American Institute of Graphic Arts, Salons of America, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and many other venues.

He was also an active member of many art societies including the National Academy, American Watercolor Society, Woodstock Artists Alliance and American Artists Congress, among others.

His work is held in the permanent collections of many institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Museum of Modern Art, National Museum of Norway, and numerous others both nationally and internationally.
