Benjamin Williams Leader was born in Worcester on March 12, 1831. He was the son of E. Leader Williams. He reversed his second and his surname to distinguish himself from the Williams family of artists. Leader was a painter of landscapes and costal scenes in oil. He studied at the Worcester School of Design and at the Royal Academy in 1853. He exhibited at the Royal Academy regularly from 1854; won a gold medal at the Paris Exhibition, 1889; and won a medal at the Chicago Exhibition, 1893. He was elected as an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1883. He worked in Scotland, Wales, and the Midland, and on occasions in Switzerland from 1872. He lived in Surrey for some years with his wife, Mary Eastlake Leader, who was also an artist (flower painter). He was the father of Benjamin Eastlake Leader (landscape artist). Benjamin Williams Leader died March 22, 1923 at the age of 92.
