Cloud Drift and Snow Edwin Burrage Child (American, 1868-1937) Oil on canvas, signed and dated: “1925” (?) and titled on the reverse. Initially, an illustrator turned portrait and landscape painter, Child eventually became a familiar figure on the university lecture circuit. His own education began at the Art Students League in New York City. From there, he attended Amherst College. As an assistant to John LaFarge, he furthered his training in glasswork and murals. Starting his professional career as an illustrator for Scribner’s, he turned to painting at age 40, and exhibited extensively from that point forward. His works were shown at the National Academy of Design, Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Art Institute of Chicago and Corcoran, among many others. As a professional lecturer, he spoke at numerous colleges and universities including Yale, Michigan State College, Columbia, City College of New York and Massachusetts State College at Amherst. Child is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk.
