"Le colin-maillard" Henri Jospeh Dillens (Belgian, 1812-1872) Oil on canvas, signed and dated: 1858. A skilled engraver, lithographer and painter, in oils and watercolors, Dillens was best known for his portraits, interior and genre scenes. The first in a family of artists, his younger brother and three sons followed his example into an artistic life. He was educated at the Academy of Ghent under Maes Canini. Residing in Antwerp from 1843-1854, he eventually settled in Brussels for the remainder of his life. After winning a prize in 1832, he began to exhibit regularly. From 1843 to 1870, he participated in exhibitions in Ghent, Antwerp and Brussels. Dillens is listed "Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, Dessinateurs, et Graveurs" by Bιnιzit and "De Belgische Beeldende Kunstenaars uit de 19de en 20ste eeuw" by Piron.
