S. Jerome Uhl, Sr. (American, 1842-1916)

Oil on panel, signed and dated: “(18)92”.

Provenance: from the Estate of Virgil McMahan.

Illustrated: Artists of Washington, D.C., 1796-1996 by Virgil McMahan.

A painter and teacher, Uhl trained as an artist in Paris. He studied under Carlous-Duran, Purvis de Chavannes and Emile. As his skill grew, he began to exhibit his paintings in Paris salons.

At 46, he established a studio in Washington, DC. remaining there for three years. Active in the local art community, he was a member of the Society of Washington Artists and the Washington Watercolor Club. He exhibited with both groups, as well as the National Academy of Design in New York. In spite of his busy schedule, he found time to instruct at the Art Students League of Washington.

Although attracted to urban scenes and landscapes, Uhl became best known as a portraitist. His portrait of President Grover Cleveland is owned by the Corcoran Gallery. The League of Women Voters owns his portrait of Susan B. Anthony. His work is also in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art and the U.S. Capitol.

Uhl is listed in Who Was Who in American Art by Falk.
