Tapié was an art critic, musician, sculptor, curator, theorist, and author as well as an artist. He was an influential practitioner of tachism, the European equivalent to abstract expressionism in the United States. Tapié established himself in the art world from the 1940’s to the 1970’s. He was one of the major proponents of the European postwar movement known as “informal art”. He was a popular figure among artists of the day due to his organizing of numerous exhibitions of contemporary art, including Jackson Pollock’s first solo exhibition in Paris. Tapié’s portrait was painted by many artists including his cousin Henri de Toulouse Lautrec.
