Ravello (Italy)

Watercolor on paper, signed, located and dated "1901"

Sight size: 21" x 14"

Louis Warren Pulsifer was born in Newtonville, MA, Dec 2, 1869, the son of Royal MacIntosh and Clara Stacy (Keys) Pulsifer. He graduated from Harvard in 1890 and he went to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and took the course in architecture. Just before his graduation in 1892 he was taken sick, but returned to graduate in 1894.

In 1897 in the Harvard Anniversary Report for Class of 1890 he wrote: "During the past year I have had an office at No. 6 Beacon Street, Boston. I am now on my way to Europe, where I expect to spend next year in study..." It was during this trip in 1901 that he painted this view of the Ravello coastline. In 1903 in the Harvard Anniversary Report for Class of 1890 he wrote: "Since the last report I have been abroad two years on the Hutch Travelling Scholarship. I returned last September expecting to practise (sp) architecture, but, on account of continued ill health, I have not yet been able to do  so.”

Pulsifer died at Estes Park, CO., July 9, 1905.
