Chapin was a graduate of the Art Institute of Chicago as well as the University of Chicago. He was a painter and the director of the Michigan Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Chicago. Chapin exhibited extensively at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Detroit Institute of Art.
While serving during WWI, Chapin executed numerous pen and ink drawings of battles and soldiers whch are held in the collection of the WWI Museum in Kansas City, MO.
Additionally he was the author of two books: “Visual Understanding” (1954) and “Drawing the Human Figure”(1939).
