Vincent Clare (English, 1855-1930)

"Still Life of Fruit with Raspberries, Plums and Apricots" and "A Basket of Flowers with Chrysanthemums and Christmas Cactus"
- A pair of paintings

Oils-on-canvas, signed lower right

Painting: 14" x 18"
Frame: 19.25" x 23.25"

Vincent Clare was the brother of Oliver and the son of George, all three of whom were still life painters in Birminghm. Both brothers painted charming still lifes with fruit and flowers often incorporating a bird’s nest and all placed against the background of a mossy bank. There is no record of where Vincent obtained his training, but it is certain that some was under the tutelage of his father. His stippling technique and his choice of subject matter bear close resemblance to that of his father. There are few exhibition records for Vincent, other than some at the Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool between 1888 and 1897. Sources: Johnson, J. and A Greutzner.
