The Bath to Bristol Coach Oil-on-canvas, signed. Provenance: Frost & Reed, Ltd., London. Charles Waller Shayer was a painter of landscapes and sporting scenes. He was the son of William Shayer senior (artist) and brother to Henry Thring Shayer (artist). With his brother Henry he studied and worked in his father's studio. After the death of his father he moved with Henry to Wadsworth where he outlived him by fifty years. Charles is noted for painting a more powerful and realistic type of horse than William and is considered to be the best horse painter of the Shayer family. He exhibited at the Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street, in 1879. Shayer is listed in Sally Mitchell, Dictionary of British Equestrian Artists, and Christopher Wood, Dictionary of Victorian Painters. Painting: 22" x 34" Frame: 28.5" x 40.75" |
