Although usually listed as a British artist, Hay was born in Florence and spent most of his life in Italy, primarily in Venice, Capri, Naples and briefly in Bruges. His mother was the English artist Jane Benham Hay (thus the British connection) and his father the Italian artist Francesco Saverio Altamura. Hay exhibited four of his paintings at the annual Milan Art exhibition in 1883 and three works in Rome.
Although little biographical information is available on Hay, he is known for his paintings of the scenes and people of Naples as well as his many views of Venice and its canals.
