The son of artist Clarkson Stanfield, George Stanfield trained and worked with his father and also attended the Royal Academy Schools. He painted both in oil and watercolor, exhibiting at the British Institution and at the Royal Academy. He most often painted views in France, Holland, Germany, Switzerland and Italy, especially along the Rhine and Italian lakes. He is also known for his coastal views in France and Britain. Although he painted in his own style it is sometimes confused with his father’s work who influenced him greatly.
Stanfield’s works are in the Victoria and Albert Museum, the British Museum and other locations both in Britain and Germany.
