French School, Circa 1870-1880. Oil on board About to Go Out
Painting size: 31.5” x 20” In this Belle Époque painting, a woman admires herself in front of a cheval mirror. Her outfit, though luxurious, is comprised of incongruent elements. The low necked, short sleeved silk dress is an evening gown, complete with a cord that temporarily holds the train off the floor. To accessorize, she dons a narrow brimmed hat with an ostrich feather and carries a matching red parasol, items suited for an afternoon stroll in the park. Studying the effect of her ensemble, the young woman wears a self-satisfied expression on her face. All-in-all a charming portrayal typical of the works of the belle époque artists. |
