Henry Hobart Nichols, Jr. (American 1869-1962) Fishing Boats in Harbor Oil on canvas, signed lower left.
Painting Size: 22” x 36” A painter and illustrator, Nichols was born in Washington, DC. His father was a prominent wood engraver during the Civil War. His brother, Spencer, and his wife, Wihelmina were both painters. He had a diverse training beginning with instruction from Howard Helmick at the Art Students League in Washington before heading to Europe where he studied at both the Froebel Institute in Germany and at the Academie Julian in Paris. His early career (1889-1905) included a position on the Board of the Art Students League, as well as employment by the U.S. government as an illustrator for both the U.S. Geological Society and the Bureau of American Ethnology. Around 1910 he moved to Bronxville, NY where he lived until his death in 1962. A member of numerous artists’ societies including the Washington Watercolor Club and Society of Washington Artists, Nichols received countless awards for his works. He is represented in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the National Museum of American Art, the Corcoran Gallery, the Phillips Collection and the White House among others.
