Enrico Gamba (Italian, 1831-1883)

"Carnevale Veneziano"

Oil-on-artist board; signed lower left.

Exhibited: Museo de Bellas Artes, Vina del Mar, Chile.

Gamba painted landscapes, history and genre scenes. He was born on January 3, 1831 in Turin and died in the same city on October 9, 1883. Here he studied at the Academia Albertina with Cusa and Arienti, and in 1850, he went to Francfort-sur-le-Mein, where he studied with Steinle. He traveled often, always frequenting the studios of painters, and when he returned to Italy in 1854, he went to Venice and Rome to study with the masters. Gamba was known as a good landscape artist, an accurate fresco artist, and he acquired notoriety above all for his historic paintings. In his works we can see evidence of his mastery of design, meticulous care of details, and knowledge of composition. Gamba also decorated many frescoes for Italian churches and palaces recalling his paintings, and he later became a talented teacher. He exhibited in Vienna and Frankfurt between 1873 and 1881.

He is listed in Benezit's, Dictionnaire des Peintres, Sculpteurs, etc...
