Rare Brass Imperial Bushel Measure, the bottom engraved: “Corcoran Fecit, London” one side engraved: “Lynn, Regis, 1825” the other side engraved: “Imperial Bushel, Bastick & Son, London 1881”, and with various royal ciphers on the top rim. Provenance : Ex-Collection Sen. John Warner, Alexandria, Virginia Cities in England used to have official standard weights and measures. Merchants weights and measures would be checked against this to make sure they weren't trying to cheat their customers. Lynn Regis or King’s Lynn is a seaport and market town in the county of Norfolk in the east of England. This one is dated 1825 - the first year that Imperial Standard weights and measures were issued, just before they were made legal (1826). This may in fact be earlier as the maker's inscription on the bottom has had the date erased. It was transferred to the custody of Bastick and Son in 1881. Thomas Bastick and his son Richard were active as scale makers in London in the nineteenth century. The firm became known as Richard Bastick and Son (1864-1914). These are extremely rare since most were melted down for shell casings during the two World Wars.
