Alfred Montague (English, active, 1832-1883)
At Rouen & Rotterdam: a pair of paintings
Oil on artist board, each signed lower right and titled on the reverse.
Painting size: 11.75” x 9.75”
A talented artist, Montague was known for painting landscapes, town and coastal views. In addition to English locales, his paintings represented scenes in Holland, Belgium and France with the rivers Seine and Meuse as favorite settings. He also appears to have travelled to Scotland.
He exhibited extensively at the Royal Society of British Artists, Suffolk Street (where he was a member), the Royal Academy, the British Institution and other London Galleries.
Brook-Hart says of him: “Alfred Montague alternated between landscape and coastal or estuary scenes with the occasional seascape. His ‘water pieces’ seem to show some influence by Turner, but he developed a style and palette unmistakably his own. . . . In his own day he was quite highly appreciated (with his work garnering) considerable amounts of money at that period.
His work is now held in the permanent collections of the Salford Art Gallery and City of York Gallery.
