Steelink was born in Amsterdam . He studied with his father, a well known painter and engraver, and also at art academies in Amsterdam and Antwerp. He is known primarily as a painter of landscapes, animals (mostly sheep) and genre scenes, equally adept in oil, watercolor and gouache. He was at the forefront of modern Dutch landscape painters. Steelink was also noted for his engravings of works by the great masters. In the 1880’s he came under the influence of the artists of the Hague School and traveled throughout the countryside painting plein air landscapes, capturing light and atmosphere in his pastoral scenes. Steelink exhibited at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts and the Royal Academy. One of his works is held in the Art Museum at the Hague.
