Alexander Brownlie Docharty (Scottish, 1862-1940) San Giorgio from the Giudeca - Venice Watercolor on paper, signed lower right. In original carved wood and plaster gilt frame. Provenance: Frost and Reed
Painting Size: 7” x 10” Docharty, the nephew of James Docharty was a landscape painter primarily of Scottish scenery. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees. After a period of designing calico (as had his father), he began painting as a profession in 1882 and exhibited at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy and elsewhere. He studied in Paris in 1894. He lived and worked in Kilkerran, Ayrshire, but also painted the Highlands and European countries, visiting Venice on several occasions. He mostly worked in oils, but his watercolors are quite fine with good composition and sensitive color.
