Painter, post-cubist, abstract artist Milo was the younger brother of Roger Van Gindertael, who was an artist before becoming an historian and art critic. He was a student at the Académie de Saint-Josse-ten-Noode, and of Constant Montald at the Académie des Beaux-Arts of Brussels. From 1925 to 1931 he was the deputy director of the Brussels gallery “Le Centaure”. In 1946 he became a member of Jeune Peinture Belges (Young Belgian Painters); in 1952 he was a founding member of the group Art Abstrait (Abstract Art ).
Milo’s work followed the range of Belgian art movements after WWII. From 1945 to 1950, he came under the influence of L’École de Paris, the first masters of abstraction. In close contact with the various currents of avant-garde painting, Milo followed the lead of a variety of avant garde artists, including Braque and Picasso.
After he traveled to the Belgian Congo (now Zaire) in 1953, Milo began a new evolution in his work with primitive “rhythms” exhibited by his use of materials both rough and smooth, utilizing collage effects with corrugated cardboard and sand paper. Milo’s later works exhibited a happy glow of a kind of abstract impressionism.
Milo showed his work in numerous collective exhibitions in Brussels including the group Etikhove, and the Palais des Beaux-Arts, as well as an important exhibition of the Jeune Peinture Belges. He also exhibited in Paris at the Salon des Réalités Nouvelles in 1953 and the Venice Biennale in 1962. Additionally he had many one man exhibitions of his work in Brussels and Paris.
His work is in museums in Antwerp, Brussels, Liege, Ixelles, and the Louvre .
