Although a highly regarded author and educator, Shenton is best known for his illustrations of some of the greatest literary creations of the 20th century. Books by Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Wolfe and Faulkner were all enhanced by his art work. However, it was his work for Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings’ The Yearling in 1938 that became his most well-known. Afterwards, he began to focus mostly on illustrating children’s literature. In addition to creating book illustrations, Shenton was the main illustrator for Scribner’s Magazine for many years beginning in the late 1920s. He also had a career as a successful author. Shenton won the O. Henry Short Story prize for sharing his experiences during WWI, and often contributed to the Saturday Evening Post, The New Yorkers, Colliers, and Atlantic Monthly.
